About Chiropractic

History of Chiropractic

Daniel David (D.D.) Palmer, the developer of chiropractic, performed his first adjustment in 1895. He adjusted Harvey Lillard, a partially deaf janitor, who later mentioned that he had noticed improvement in his hearing. Just two years later, D.D. Palmer opened the first chiropractic school. Since that time, the chiropractic adjustment has provided relief to millions of people.

What is a Doctor of Chiropractic?

Most often Doctors of Chiropractic are referred to as a Chiropractor. They practice a hands-on, drug-free approach to health care including examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors are board certified physicians trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, provide nutritional and dietary advice, and offer lifestyle counseling.
If a patient’s presentation and condition are not suited for chiropractic care, chiropractors will make appropriate referrals to other health care providers.

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

Chiropractic adjustments are the most common and well known procedure performed by a Doctor of Chiropractic. The purpose of the chiropractic adjustment is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become restricted in their motion. Restoring motion back into the joint and the surrounding soft tissues decreases nerve interference, alleviates pain, reduces muscle tightness and allows healing.
