What We Treat

Neck Pain

Far too many people suffer from neck pain; however, very few of them have tried chiropractic care. Did you know that Doctors of Chiropractic have been successfully treating neck pain for well over 100 years?

Chiropractic Care for Neck Pain
There are many causes of neck pain, some of the most common include: poor posture, stress, repetitive movement, weakened spinal muscles, degenerative disease, injury and accident. Treating the cause of neck pain can be nearly impossible if you don’t know the root of the problem. Doctors of Chiropractic perform thorough neurological and muscular examinations, paired with an extensive history to find the source of the problem in order to appropriately treat the cause.

Research on Chiropractic & Neck Pain
A 2007 article posted in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found evidence that patients with chronic neck pain showed significant pain-level improvements following spinal manipulation. None of the groups reported remaining unchanged and all groups showed positive changes. For more research supporting chiropractic, click here.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Often, chiropractic gets dismissed for only treating back pain. Doctors of Chiropractic treat a variety of symptoms and conditions such as headaches, migraines, leg and arm pain – including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful condition caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist, usually due to an underlying medical condition. If you are wondering if your wrist pain could be due to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and you are looking for a more conservative and gentle approach to care, we invite you to continue reading for further details and alternative treatments available at 605 Chiropractic & Wellness.

Carpal Tunnel in Sioux Falls

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is often accompanied by feelings of numbness, pain, burning, tingling, and swelling extending from the palm of the hand to the humb, index, middle and ring fingers. Often, patients will experience weakness in the affected hand and report have difficulty gripping objects or making a fist. If left untreated, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can cause lasting nerve damage that may keep you from the things you enjoy most and have a major effect on your lifestyle.

Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition of nerve entrapment. The pain that patients experience are due to misalignment of the bones along the median nerve pathway causing inflammation to the local tissues, such as ligaments and tendons, and to the nerve itself.

Some patients report a prior injury to the wrist or forearm that causes the symptoms to develop. Others are unable to recall a specific event that may have caused the condition to progress over time. The most common cause of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is due to engagement in repetitive motions. Examples of people commonly diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include: carpenters, musicians, auto mechanics, gardeners, golfers, and those who use computers for many hours throughout their day.

Occasionally, symptoms associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may develop without a clear cause and may be due to metabolic disorders, obesity and/or pregnancy. More commonly, if Carpal Tunnel Syndrome develops in one or both wrists without a distinct cause, it is likely the result of nerve irritation and entrapment stemming from the spine.

Treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Previously, the only known intervention for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome included prescription drugs, physical or occupational therapy, and surgery costing people thousands of dollars in medical care and often short-term relief of their symptoms.

Fortunately, Doctors of Chiropractic are trained to find and treat the root of the problem.  They will perform a thorough evaluation and develop a treatment plan individualized to correct the nerve interference. Many people in Sioux Falls achieve phenomenal results with chiropractic care. Don’t hesitate to call 605 Chiropractic & Wellness for a consultation about your wrist pain.

Motor Vehicle Injuries

Unfortunately, auto injuries are common. Many times, people are more concerned about dealing with their vehicle and their auto insurance company that they forget about their personal health and neglect to seek proper care.

Common Misconceptions

  1. Injuries acquired in an auto accident are noticed immediately following the wreck.
  2. Injuries may only be in high speed impact collisions.

Understanding Auto Injuries

It is of utmost importance that people understand that injury follows a multitude of collision types. For instance, did you know collisions occurring at just 5 mph are capable of producing injury? At just 5 mph, there is enough force produced to sustain a whiplash injury. Additionally, while some injuries are noticed immediately – cuts, bruises and broken bones – others may not be evident for months following the accident. Therefore, it is of high importance that you get a complete evaluation immediately following your accident.

Chiropractic Care for Auto Injuries in Sioux Falls

Doctors of Chiropractic are extraordinary in treating the musculoskeletal system. Many auto injuries involve the soft tissues, including ligamentous sprains and muscle strains, and injuries to the spine. It makes sense that chiropractic would be your first stop to exceptional care for your injuries sustained in an auto accident. At 605 Chiropractic & Wellness, we will perform a thorough examination, documenting the complete degree of any injury you may have sustained due to accident. PEDIATRIC CARE

Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy, birth and childhood offers a solid foundation of wellness for infants and children. A Doctor of Chiropractic is trained to find and correct spinal misalignments that impair overall nervous system function in a child.

Many parents choose to have their newborns checked immediately after birth due to the extreme amount of stress that is place upon the infant’s spine during the birthing process. Likewise, as an infant begins to grow, hold their head, sit, crawl and walk different stressors are placed on your child’s spine causing misalignment. During these various stages of growth, it is important to have your child checked.

It is also important to note that chiropractors do not treat diseases or conditions, instead they seek to reduce the interference placed upon the nervous system by spinal subluxations allowing the body to heal itself. Apart from wellness care, chiropractic adjustments also help with:

  • Colic
  • Allergies
  • Digestive problems
  • Asthma and other breathing problems
  • Nursing difficulties
  • Sleep disturbances and bed wetting
  • Ear infections

Prenatal Care

Throughout pregnancy a woman’s body encounters of great deal of stress often leading to discomfort. Women in Sioux Falls often complain about shoulder tension, low back pain, sciatica and other associated symptoms while pregnant. Ultimately, such symptoms may lead to difficulty performing activities of daily living and can translate into a more difficult delivery.

Changes Resulting in Discomfort

  • Protruding abdomen
  • Increased curve of the low back
  • Pelvic imbalance
  • Postural adaptations

Why Chiropractic Care?

Throughout pregnancy many changes occur in preparation to create a suitable environment for the developing baby. When the pelvis is misaligned, it may reduce the amount of space available for the growing baby. A misaligned pelvis may also make it increasingly more difficult for the baby to get into the best position for delivery, affecting the mother’s ability to have a natural, non-invasive birth.

Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Chiropractic treatment has provided many women in Sioux Falls significant relief. The Doctor of Chiropractic utilizes specialized adjustment methods to accommodate the pregnant mother. Treatment is specific and effective, aimed to reduce misalignments of the pelvis and sacrum, allowing for optimal baby positioning. Chiropractic care reduces restrictions placed upon the pelvis, permitting optimal biomechanics for an easier, safer birth.

Many mothers continue receiving care post pregnancy as their body is again transitioning. Treatments following delivery assist the body in spinal and pelvic realignment and aid in the healing process.

Chiropractic Treatment in Sioux Falls

While powerful medications are convenient and may provide short term relief to your headache symptoms and numb your nervous system, they do not correct the underlying problem that causes your ongoing, reoccurring symptoms. Often headaches are caused by subluxations, or misalignments of the bones in your neck. Subluxations in your neck can affect your nerves, muscles and even the blood supply to your head resulting in the unpleasant pain in your head.

Doctors of Chiropractic recognize that the pain you are experiencing is a warning sign for what may be an underlying problem arising from your spine. Chiropractic treatment begins with an in-depth examination, evaluating the nervous system, muscular function and spinal alignment, and rules out any other probable causes of your headaches.

Following examination, the doctor will provide you with a unique, individualized treatment plan to get you feeling better the fastest and provide you with long lasting results. Chiropractic adjustments reduce the physical stress placed on your body due to misalignments of your vertebrae and address the cause of your headache or migraine. Adjustments may provide nearly instant relief of your symptoms and get you back on track toward health.

Back Pain

Many people in Sioux Falls suffer from chronic back pain, yet very few have sought chiropractic care. Most patients are unaware of how chiropractic care can help them or that chiropractic care has been successfully treating back pain for over 100 years. It is our goal, at 605 Chiropractic & Wellness, to educate you on back pain and the benefits of chiropractic care. Here is some helpful information in your search toward pain relief.

Facts About Back Pain

  • Low back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide.
  • Nearly one-half of all working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year.
  • Back pain is one of the most common reasons of missed work.
  • Back pain is second, only to upper-respiratory infections, for doctor’s office visits.
  • Americans spend nearly $50 billion each year on back pain.
  • Back surgeries are often avoidable with other non-invasive options.

Causes of Back Pain

The spine is a very complicated structure containing many different bones, joints, ligamentous and muscular structures. Irritating any variety of these different components many result in consequent back pain. You can strain a muscle, sprain a ligament, or rupture a disc. While larger injuries to the back may occur due to sporting activities or motor vehicle accidents, back pain may also be a result of arthritis, poor posture, obesity, kidney stones, blood clots, and most commonly subluxation.

Chiropractic as a Treatment for Back Pain

Spinal adjustments, used primarily by Doctors of Chiropractic, have been ignored for many years. With today’s growing interest in alternative options for back pain and an emphasis on treatment and cost effectiveness, more and more heads are turning their attention to chiropractic care. Chiropractic adjustments are a safe, non-invasive, effective treatment option for back pain. Adjustments restore motion in the joints of the spine, promoting healing and reduction of your pain symptoms.

Research Regarding Chiropractic and Back Pain

In a recent study published by the Spine medical journal it was found that chiropractic care offers a quicker recovery from back pain than standard medical care.

Schneider M, Haas M, Glick R, Stevans J, Landsittel D. A comparison of spinal manipulation methods and usual medical care for acute and sub-acute low back pain: a randomized clinical trial. Spine 2014; Nov 21.

A study performed by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research recommends that those who suffer from low back pain seek the most conservative care first. It goes on to recommend spinal manipulation as the only safe and effective, drug free form of initial treatment for acute low back pain in adults.

Bigos S, Bowyer O, Braen G, et al. Acute Low Back Problems in Adults. Clinical Practice Guideline No.14. AHCPR Publication No. 95-0642. Rockville, MD: Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, Public Health Service, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. December 1994.

Sciatica

Sciatica refers to a condition commonly characterized by pain, numbness and/or weakness radiating from the lower back to the buttock and down the back of the leg – along the pathway of the sciatic nerve. If you suffer from sciatic pain, you know how disruptive it can be. Don’t delay, waiting to seek treatment may only cause you increased pain and long-term damage.

Sciatic Pain in Sioux Falls
The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It runs from the pelvis, through the region of the hip and buttocks, then its branches extend down the legs to the ankles and feet. Sitting and/or standing for an extended period may cause your symptoms to worsen. Likewise, while performing motions of flexion (a forward bending position), the pain you are experiencing may increase. On the other hand, activities such as walking, lying down and motions extending (back bending) the spine may relieve some the symptoms you are suffering from.

Causes of Sciatica

  • Subluxations or misalignments of the vertebrae in the low back can cause irritation of the sciatic nerve due to chronic poor posture, sudden injuries – work injuries, auto injuries, athletic injuries.
  • A bulging or herniated disc can result from a variety of scenarios placing pressure upon the sciatic nerve. Intervertebral discs provide a cushion between each vertebra and the nerves exiting the spinal column. When the stress placed upon the discs is increased, the discs begin to bulge and can even crack open. When this occurs, the intervertebral disc begins to press on the sciatic nerve causing your painful symptoms.
  • Piriformis Syndrome – The piriformis muscle sits directly over the sciatic nerve pathway; spasms of the piriformis muscle can irritate the sciatic nerve.
  • Narrowing of the spinal canal, also known as spinal stenosis, can occur causing the nerves which travel through the tightening regions to get pinched.
  • Occasionally, sciatic pain may also be caused by sitting on a wallet.
